THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Herbert Ralland as Mr. Blushington in Utopia, Limited |
Herbert Ralland (1890-92, 1893-94)
[Born Shoreditch, London 1860, died Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 1 Feb 1942]
Tenor Herbert Ralland toured with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B" from November 1890 to June 1892 as Colonel Fairfax in The Yeomen of the Guard, Marco in The Gondoliers, and (from December 1891 forward) Indru in The Nautch Girl. Shortly thereafter he left the Carte organization to tour as Alfredo in Gilbert & Cellier's The Mountebanks.
The following year he returned to the Company and, in October 1893 at the Savoy, created the small part of Mr. Blushington, of the County Council (one of the "Flowers of Progress"), in the first production of Utopia Limited. He next took the small parts of the Notary and Max in the first production of Mirette (July-August 1894), but by the time the revised version was presented in October Ralland was back on tour with D'Oyly Carte's Company "A" as Captain Fitzbattleaxe in Utopia. He toured as Fitzbattleaxe until December 1894 when, it appears, he left the D'Oyly Carte and the stage.
He soon went into stage managing (at Terry's Theatre, London, 1897-98) and was for many years a touring theatrical manager.
