Baritone Samuel Reed's only engagement with D'Oyly Carte was with Carte's Fourth American Mikado Company, under the management of John Stetson. He replaced Gustave Kammerlee as the Mikado in January or February 1886.

In June 1886 he made his New York debut in Millöcker's The Maid of Belleville at the Star Theatre. Reed appeared frequently in New York and elsewhere during the late 1880s and early 1890s, including several years with DeWolf Hopper's Company in Wang and Panjandrum.
