THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Judith Rees (1972-74)
[Born 1948]
Judith Rees trained at the Nottingham County School of Music and at the Royal Academy of Music before joining the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1972.
She was a soprano chorister with D'Oyly Carte for the bulk of the two seasons spanning September 1972 and August 1974, leaving July 27, 1974. During the 1973-74 season she appeared regularly as Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance and Ruth in Ruddigore. She also filled in on occasion that year as the Lady Ella in Patience, Celia in Iolanthe, and Casilda in The Gondoliers.
After leaving the D'Oyly Carte, Miss Rees appeared with the English Opera Group in 1974, where she was called upon to sing a principal role in La Rondine due to illness of the lead. She may be heard on several recordings including Rameau's La Princesse de Navarre (Erato, 1979), Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (Chandos, 1981), and a Nonesuch collection of John Adams' music.
