THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Joan Rivers (1882-83)
Soprano Joan Rivers appeared with several D'Oyly Carte touring companies between June 1882 and July 1883. Her first role was Patience with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Patience" Company in June 1882, filling in for Ethel Pierson. The following month she transferred to Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "B" Company, taking Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore and Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance for parts of July and August. She then went to America where she appeared (September-October 1882) with yet another Carte company at New York's Standard Theatre as Clorinda de Lorenzana in Bucalossi's Les Manteaux Noirs. Upon her return to Britain she rejoined the old "B" Company:now known as Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "Pinafore" and "Pirates" Company, resuming her parts as Josephine and Mabel in February 1883. She left the tour and the D'Oyly Carte organization that July.
