THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Frank Robey (1901-03)
[Born Bow, London 23 Mar 1876, died Norfolk Dec 1910]
Frank Egleton Robey was a baritone chorister with D'Oyly Carte Repertoire Opera Company "C" from at least late 1901, when he appeared from time to time as the Colonel in the Bartholeyns & Clarke companion piece The Outpost, which was played with The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, and Iolanthe.
In April 1902 he went with another D'Oyly Carte company on a tour of South Africa. There he regularly played the Foreman in Trial by Jury, Samuel in Pirates, the Lieutenant of the Tower in The Yeomen of the Guard, Tarara in Utopia Limited, and the Grand Vizier in The Rose of Persia. He also played Antonio and Luiz in The Gondoliers at various times and was one of three artists to appear as Major Murgatroyd in Patience. The South Africa tour ended in May 1903 and so, it appears, did Robey's association with D'Oyly Carte organization. Following the South Africa tour he married D'Oyly Carte contralto chorister Rose Hill and together they left the Company.
