THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Walter Rose (1894-98)
[Born c.1862]
Tenor Walter Rose was a chorister with D'Oyly Carte's American Utopia Limited Company in New York and Boston, March-June 1894. He took his first role, Lord Dramaleigh in Utopia, later on a provincial tour with D'Oyly Carte's Company "A" from October to December 1894, filling in briefly for Herbert Ralland as Captain Fitzbattleaxe in October and November. A chorister, understudy, and small part player, he then transferred to Carte's Company "E," where, over the next several years, he appeared regularly as Francesco in The Gondoliers (December 1894-July 1897), and deputized on at least one occasion for H. Enes Blackmore as Picorin in Mirette (February 1895). He remained in the Company "E" chorus until at least 1898.
