Welbye Wallace (1883-84)
Tenor Welbye Wallace (nee W. Harrington Mitchell) was stage manager for Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 2 "Iolanthe" Company beginning in December 1882. In November 1883 and January 1884 he took his only part with the Company, deputizing for Courtice Pounds as Earl Tolloller in the fairy opera. Wallace was stage manager until July 1884, when he was succeeded by Albert James. It appears he remained with the Company, however, perhaps as chorister and understudy. In October 1884, he assumed the role of business manager for what was by then known as Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "E" Company, serving in that capacity until December 1885.
Prior to joining the D'Oyly Carte organization, Wallace was best known as a concert singer, appearing in the British provinces in the mid to late-1870s.
He was reportedly married to D'Oyly Carte mezzo-soprano/contralto Millie Vere.
