Soprano Alison West was educated at the Manchester School of Music. She served in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus from July 1977 (joining for the new production of Iolanthe) until September 1979, filling in on occasion as Sacharissa in Princess Ida (1977-78), Rose Maybud in Ruddigore (1978-79), and Giulia in The Gondoliers (1978-79). She was the Company's regular Giulia from February to April 1979.
Upon leaving the Company she adopted the professional name of Alison Charlton-West. She has continued to appear professionally, notably in the musical Chess (1987-89) and with First Act Opera International, and serves on the faculty of Huntingdon Regional College where she teaches solo singing. In July 1993 she appeared as Peep-Bo in The Mikado with Regency Opera in Richmond, Surrey, and in November 2000 she appeared in "An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan" at Swansea's Grand Theatre.
