THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Beatrix Young (1881-86)
[Born London c.1859]
Beatrix Young was serving as a chorister in the Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "B" Company on tour in the spring of 1881, and in September of that year moved up to principal soubrette, succeeding Marion Grahame as Constance Partlett in The Sorcerer and Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore. In November 1881, when The Pirates of Penzance replaced The Sorcerer in the "B" Company repertoire, Miss Young took the part of Edith in the new opera.
She toured as Hebe and Edith with "B" Company (later known as Mr. D'Oyly Cartes "Pinafore" and "Pirates" Company) until February 1883, when she joined Carte's new No. 1 "Iolanthe" Company, taking the title role in the fairy opera through December 1883. Miss Young next took the part of Melissa in the first provincial production of Princess Ida with Carte's "D" ("Princess Ida" No. 1) Company, from February 1884 to May 1885. That month she moved to Carte's "E" Company, where she was the first provincial Pitti-Sing in The Mikado. She left "E" Company and the D'Oyly Carte in September 1886.
