THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Stanley Youngman as Bill Bobstay in H.M.S. Pinafore |
Stanley Youngman (1947-51
[Born Bournemouth c.1915]
Baritone Stanley Harold Youngman served in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus from September 1947 to August 1951. During his last three seasons with the Company, 1948-51, Youngman appeared regularly in the small part of Annibale in The Gondoliers, and in one of them (1949-50) played Bill Bobstay in H.M.S. Pinafore and shared Sergeant Bouncer in Cox and Box with Peter Pratt. He also filled in on occasion as the Usher in Trial by Jury (1948-51), the Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance (1949), Pooh-Bah in The Mikado (1949-50), Wilfred Shadbolt in The Yeomen of the Guard (1949), Don Alhambra in The Gondoliers (1949 and 1951), and Bob Beckett in Pinafore (1950-51). (Youngman is credited with Annibale on the Company's 1950 recording of The Gondoliers, however, as the part has no solo music and the recording is without dialogue, the attribution is surely an oversight.)
