A critical performing edition, edited by Colin Jagger, Director of Music, University of Portsmouth, has been published by Oxford University Press. The edition presents the opera as it was originally conceived, correcting errors found in older editions and includes unpublished songs, alternative endings and the complete libretto. Both the vocal score and the full score are available on sale. Full scores and clearly printed orchestral parts are available on hire/rental, and are consistent with the vocal score.

PJ Music Works has produced a reduced orchestration used by
The Abbots Langley Gilbert and Sullivan Society (England), regular performers at the Buxton International Festival, in February 2005. This new version reduces the wind and brass from 14 (2122,223 +percussion and strings) to 8 (1111,211 + percussion and strings) and thus can be performed effectively with 15 instrumentalists whilst providing colour and balance as close to the original as possible.
