THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Yvonne Dean (1945-46, 1949-50)

Yvonne Dean was known as Yvonne Burton, her birth name, when she first joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. She served in the D'Oyly Carte chorus from October 1945 to August 1946, and again from August 1949 until March 1950. During her first tour she deputized for Marjorie Eyre in the title role in Iolanthe on June 6, 1946. During her second stint with the Company she appeared, regularly, as Yvonne Dean, in the small part of Vittoria in The Gondoliers, and also filled in on occasion as Kate in The Pirates of Penzance.

Mrs. Dean was later known as Yvonne Newman. She may be heard on a number of D'Oyly Carte recordings--as Tessa and Vittoria (Gondoliers, 1950), Leila (Iolanthe, 1951), the Lady Angela (Patience, 1951 and 1961), Constance (The Sorcerer, 1953), Iolanthe (Iolanthe, 1960). She may also be heard as Edith on the much-maligned 1966 RCA Victrola recording of The Pirates of Penzance produced and directed by Martyn Green.

In 1970 she was reported in The Savoyard to be teaching singing and taking private pupils.
