Phyllis Dicksee as Gianetta in The Gondoliers

Phyllis Dicksee (1917-19)

[Born Hampstead, London 16 Mar 1891, died Hertford 1978]

Soprano Phyllis Mary Dicksee made her London Stage debut as Rosalie in the operetta Carminetta, at the Prince of Wales's Theatre on August 22, 1917. It appears she played the role until December, when she was engaged by the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company to replace Kay Blake in principal soprano roles. She appeared for the next year-and-a-half as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Patience in Patience, Princess Ida in Princess Ida, Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, and Gianetta in The Gondoliers. During her last few months with the Company she would share those roles with, or yield them to, the new and returning artists who would replace her:Elsie Griffin as Josephine and Gianetta, and Sylvia Cecil as Patience, Ida, and Elsie.

Phyllis Dicksee left the D'Oyly Carte organization in June 1919.
