THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Lucile Hill as Dorothy Vernon in Haddon Hall |
Lucile Hill (1892-93)
American-born soprano Lucile Hill appeared in Sullivan's Ivanhoe at the Royal English Opera House as Lady Rowena beginning in February 1891, the part shared with Esther Palliser in double casting. Later in the run she also appeared as Rebecca. Miss Hill would remain at the Royal English Opera House for Messager's La Basoche (November 1891-January 1892) as Colette.
Her only venture into comic opera came with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company from September 1892 to April 1893 when she created the role of Dorothy Vernon in Grundy & Sullivan's Haddon Hall at the Savoy. She left the Savoy just before the run ended, and headed for Drury Lane where she sang the title role in Maritana. She would remain active in grand opera and concert work, in London and on tour, until 1909. Her opera roles included Micaela in Carmen, Nedda in Pagliacci, Margherita and Valentine in Les Huguenots, Elizabeth and Venus in Tannhauser, Isolde in Tristan and Isolde, Marguerite in Faust, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, and Leonora in Il Trovatore.
