James William Hooper appeared as Scaphio with the D'Oyly Carte's American Utopia Limited Company in New York and Boston from March until June 1894. It was his only engagement with the D'Oyly Carte organization.

He later toured Great Britain with J. W. Boughton's Company, appearing as Mats Munck in, and serving as stage manager for, Boughton's production of Gilbert & Carr's "His Excellency" in the autumn of 1895. Hooper's stage career embracibg musical comedy, variety, pantomime, music hall, and character acting would last until at least 1931. He also had some turns as a motion picture actor.
