Dudley Howard (1880)

When D'Oyly Carte's Second America The Pirates of Penzance Company in Philadelphia launched two weeks of H.M.S. Pinafore April 12, 1880, Dudley Howard was engaged to play Ralph Rackstraw (his first appearance at the Broad Street Theatre). It was not a success in the view of the reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer, who said Howard sang the part "but poorly." By the time the Company arrived in Baltimore, on April 26, Howard had been replaced by J. C. Armand.
