THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
James Stevenson (1886-89, 1891)
James Stevenson was a chorister with the D'Oyly Carte's first continental touring company in 1886. Beginning in 1887 he toured the British provinces with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "C," and from November 1888 to December 1889 was Second Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard. He also filled in on one occasion in November 1889 as Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen when Charles Conyers fell ill. Stevenson later transferred to D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "D," where, from August to December 1891, he appeared as Bumbo in The Nautch Girl.
Stevenson later appeared in London as Mr. Ithaacth in the burlesque All My Eye-vanhoe (Trafalgar, October-November 1894), and as the fifth of six performers to play George Appleby in the musical The Shop Girl (Gaiety, November 1894-May 1896).
