THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Marie Strachane (1883)
[Born Leeds 20 Jan 1861]
Marie Strachane (born Mary Eleanor Strachen) toured with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Patience" Company from May to December 1883, appearing as Maude Dalglish in Matrimony, or, Six and Six Where Suited, the one-act operetta that served as "curtain-raiser" for Patience. It seems to have been her only D'Oyly Carte engagement. She later toured with Albert James in Fun on the Bristol and My Sweetheart in 1887-88.
In 1889 Miss Strachane bought the production rights to a musical comedy drama called My Nadine (book by Hal Collier, music by Jules de Croix). She took the title role when the work opened in Folkestone in May 1889. My Nadine was a financial success for its producer. It toured for several seasons:through at least 1893 when it was known as The Swiss Guide.
