THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
J. Mansell Stringer (1903-04)
[Born Dublin 22 May 1883, died London 1934]
Baritone John William Maunsell Stringer spent the two years from January 1903 to December 1904 with D'Oyly Carte Repertoire Opera Company "C" (later the D'Oyly Carte Principal Repertory Opera Company). He appeared regularly both years as Antonio in The Gondoliers, and also assumed the part of Mons. Sarsenet in Cunningham Bridgman and François Cellier's companion piece Bob for a portion of the 1904 tour. In June 1904 Stringer filled in briefly as Strephon in Iolanthe while G. Villiers Arnold was deputizing for C. H. Workman as the Lord Chancellor.
Stringer later appeared in London as the Rickshaw man in the Adelphi pantomime Aladdin (December 1907-January 1908), and as Peter in the musical play Butterflies at the Apollo (the second of three in that role in a run extending from May-November 1908).
