THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Florence Terriss (1883-84)
[Born New Cross, London 29 May 1866, died Lewisham 10 Jul 1953]
Florence Terriss (real name Flora Caroline Tueski) appeared as Fleta in Iolanthe on tour with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "E" ("Iolanthe" No. 2) Company beginning in October 1883. In July 1884, "E" Company added Patience to its repertoire with Miss Terriss as the Lady Saphir. She appears to have left the Company in November 1884, when she was succeeded in both parts by Kate Kavanagh.
An extensive career in legitimate theatre followed, with occasional detours into provincial musicals and music hall. This included two years touring with the J. C. Williamson and Arthur Garner companies in Australia (1897-99).
Miss Terriss was married to F. Landor Scates, understudy to the comic baritone parts with "E" Company.
