THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Amy Thornton (1885, 1886-87)
Amy Thornton's first known engagement with the D'Oyly Carte organization was with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "C" Company:between April and July 1885 she appeared as Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance and Fleta in Iolanthe when the Company was a repertory group.
Between June 1886 and January 1887 she was a chorister with D'Oyly Carte's Continental ("G") Company, appearing in The Mikado in Germany and Austria. She returned to Britain with an newly reconstituted "C" Company in March 1887 for the first provincial production of Ruddigore. Miss Thornton appeared briefly as Ruth during two weeks of the tour (March 14-26 in Liverpool), then took the role on a regular basis from July to December of that year. It was her last role with the D'Oyly Carte organization.
Miss Thornton later appeared in London as Rose in a "musical farcical comedy" called A Trip to Chicago (Vaudeville Theatre, August 1893). She was the first to two artists to play the role.
